Somerset Budokai currently has three training venues and each have their own Instructor.

The Hombu ( main dojo) is run by Fred East 7th Dan Chief instructor.

Sensei East started his Japanese martial training in 1973 in RSA under sensei Dunlop Paul 3rd Dan Shukokai
He moved back to London in 1976 after many years in RSA and opened a dojo in Catford. Soon though, 1979, he joined Sensei R Mills then 4th Dan and trained with him gaining 2nd Dan Sankukai and 6th Dan Shitoryu in that time. When he went solo in 2011 he continued with Shitoryu Karate and his own school Higashiryu Kenbudo.

After gaining high rank in Shinkendo both at student and teaching level with Sensei Obata, he formed his own Kenbukai association, a form of Japanese Swordsmanship based on past instruction right back to 1974 with Sensei Shigeru Kimura and Dunlop, but with the confrontational aspect of Karate and the joint philosophy of both in a fighting regime.

The Young Samurai dojo for ages 6 to 15 is run by Matt Dancey 4th Dan.

Matt Dancey was a senior Gojo Ryu student years before joining Somerset Budokai where he took up Shitoryu karate and Shinkendo with sensei East in 2000.
His dedication and continual training with Somerset Budokai has enabled him to run his own dojo, teaching Kenbudo Higashi Ryu to seniors and karate and Kenbudo to juniors (Young Samurai)
